19-Year-Old Marlboro High School Graduate Dies At College

A 19-year-old member of the Marlboro First Aid and Rescue Squad died last week at Cornell University, university and EMS officials said.

MARLBORO, NJ - A 19-year-old member of the Marlboro First Aid and Rescue Squad died last week at Cornell University, university and EMS officials said.

Matthew Friedman, a Marlboro High School 2022 graduate, died on Wednesday, according to an end of watch post from the Englishtown Manalapan First Aid Squad.

Friedman, slated to graduate with a degree in biology from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2026, was found unresponsive in his dorm and was later pronounced dead on April 12, according to a report from the Cornell Sun. He had recently become a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and planned to become a doctor upon graduation, the outlet said.

Friedman was “exploring ways to use his EMT experience on the Cornell Campus,” the publication added.

A cause of his death has not been released, though a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death has been launched, per the Cornell Sun. A request for comment from Ithaca police was not immediately returned.

A private funeral service was held for Friedman on Sunday. Shiva will be observed on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Friedman residence in Marlboro.
