Weekend Crash Kills NJ Motorcycle Rider In Essex County

The crash took place at an intersection in New Jersey's largest city. Here's what happened, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — A fatal crash in Essex County claimed the life of a 40-year-old motorcycle rider from Union County last weekend, authorities say.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the crash took place around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday at the intersection of Thomas Street and Dawson Street in Newark.

Surveillance video footage showed that a 2024 Acura was traveling northbound on Dawson Street, and came to a slowed roll at the intersection before proceeding.

Meanwhile, a motorcycle traveling westbound on Thomas Street – which appeared to be traveling at an “increased speed” – proceeded towards the intersection. The motorcycle then collided with the Accura’s bumper and lost control, authorities said.

The motorcyclist – later identified as Leandro Cardoso Da Costa, 40, of Elizabeth – was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

The driver of the Acura and his passenger were not injured. The driver remained at the scene, prosecutors said.

An investigation into the crash continues, authorities said Monday.
