Christie Focused on Low Taxes, Affordable Living at Bergen County Event

Gov. Chris Christie focused on affordable living in Bergen County during his appearance at the Bergen County Senior Citizens Picnic at Van Saun Park in Paramus Tuesday. 

“For all of you who are here today who live in Bergen County, you know that this is one of the greatest places to live in the entire state,” Christie said. “We’ve got to keep working hard together to make sure that our children and grandchildren can afford to live here.”

Christie also continued to hammer away at the need for maintaining low taxes.

Gov. Christie spoke on stage in front of a crowed of a few hundred people, most of whom voiced their support. One audience member shouted out in support of Buono during his speech, but Christie took it in stride.

Democratic candidate Barbara Buono also appeared Tuesday and shook hands with senior citizens, but did not take the stage.

“I met Barbara Buono again today,” said Edna Dismus of Teaneck. 

“I support Buono in the race for governor,” Dismus said. “It always makes sense when there is a woman in charge because we have a whole different outlook on a lot of things. But more importantly I feel that she is for the people and not for herself or for the party. As far as Christie, I took the flower his people were handing out but I’m not voting for him.” 

Christie leads Buono by 20 points according to the latest Rutgers-Eagleton poll. 

When NorthJersey.com asked the Democratic challenger was asked about trailing in the polls, she responded that events such as the Bergen County Senior Citizens Picnic were a solution to the problem.

“That’s one of the reasons why we’re here today, so that people understand that I have a vision for New Jersey," Buono told NorthJersey.com. "When people understand and get to know who I am as an individual, people get excited, they want to get engaged in the campaign.”
