Girls Teams Lead the Pack for Spartans, Paladins
Each week, Patch will look back at how the Spartans and Paladins performed on the field

While the Paladins have been storming the competition on the gridiron and the Spartans are seeking their first win, its been the ladies teams that have dominated the fall sports week
FOOTBALL
Paramus Catholic was simply too fast for DePaul as the Paladins utilized a mix of cutbacks and stop-and-go manuevers for a runaway 35-13 victory. Jabrill Peppers has continued to make himself at home in the black and gold turning a 7-0 first-quarter deficit into a 28-7 halftime lead. Joining into the dominance on the field was Keyon Washington ran in a pair of touchdowns, while St. Peter's Prep transfer Marquise Watson has been busy racking up tackles left and right.

The Spartans are still seeking their first win of the season as Paramus fell 24-7 to the Lakeland Lancers. Both teams played a hard fought game, going scoreless into the second quarter where the Spartans offense shined scoring the first TD of the game on a 3-yard Matt Tozzi run followed by a Jeffery Carpenter kick. But after that point, the Lancers ruled the field earning four consecutive TD’s to win.

Paramus improved to 3-1 as the Lady Spartans downed Hackensack 25-13, 25-19, provided a tough fight for IHA in a 23-35, 16-25 loss to the Blue Eagles and then rebounded against Ridgewood. While facing the Maroons, the Lady Spartans dropped the first set 26-28 but subsequently won the next two 26-24, 25-19. Stephanie Garino recorded 27 assists, Jessica Chakonis had 42 digs, Maria Bellinger 13 kills and Erika DiPasquale netted 13 service points.
Paramus Catholic ran unto United Division rival IHA and came out on the losing end of a 7-25, 10-25 decision. The Lady Paladins also fell to Holy Angels (19-25, 21-25) and Rutherofrd (19-25, 20-25) before winning out over Union Catholic (25-21, 19-25, 25-22). Georgette Smith finished the week with 30 kills and digs; Caitlin Hall had 8 digs and 41 assists; Robin Gonsalves 12 digs; Catherine Mulick had 13 kills while Jessica Breen came up with 15 digs.
TENNIS
Paramus Catholic had a tough week being shutout by Holy Angels and then falling to crosstown rival Paramus 3-2 as singles Natalie Cioffari and Kayla Kroning picked up wins to avoid a second shutout.
The Lady Spartans were led by second singles Cyndie Wu, first doubles Ash Magalhaes/Gianne Scimeca and Chstine Nicholas/Ari Lee against the Paladins.
SOCCER
Paramus soccer was twice led by Sarah Cortes this week to victory. The Seton Hall-bound senior netted a hat trick against Hackensack and Ridgewood. The Spartans dominated the Comets' 7-0 and the Maroons' 3-0. Victoria Poplaskis netted a deuce and Noel Hadgins and Julia Koenemund’s each had solo goals for the win against Hackensack.
Delaney Suarez continues to be an offensive powerhouse for the Lady Paladins who downed Holy Angels 3-2 and Mt. St. Dominic 2-1. Facing the Angels, Kelly Nanas and Lorel Guitierrez provided a 2-0 lead at the half with Suarez adding the equalizer before the end of the game. Against the Lady Lions, Suarez teamed up with freshman Julianna Mascelli on a pair of corner kicks to secur the overtime win.
Paramus boys earned an uncontested 4-0 win over Hackensack with Lucas Tasci netting 2, Max BRotarzon and Mike Bartner one each. Goalies Alex Kaminer and Rushil Surateneni made 2 and 3 saves respectively.
The PC boys swept Bergen Catholic 2-0 with Jose Meza and Joseph Strobino each netting one. Meza and Strobino teamed up again a few days later to down St. Joseph Regional, 2-1.
CROSS COUNTRY
At the Bergen County Season Opener at Darlington Park, in the Girls Group A division, PC runners Lila Morreale clocked in at 20:45 for 10th place followed by Danielle Nelson at 21:25 for 15th.
While the Paramus boys fell to Hackensack 25-30 with Mike Secreti running the 3.1 miles at Garret Mountain in Woodland Park to earn the coveted first place finish 17:02 and Erik Helstrom picked up third in 17.32 it was not enough to get past the Comets.
On the other hand, the Lady Spartans conquered Hackensack 28 to 29 with Lindsey Lucas and Jolie Bartner pacing the 1-2 spots in 21:17 and 21:34 respectively. Lauren Mihalik came in fourth at 23:51.
PC boys were no match for Don Bosco at Darlington’s 3.1 miles as the Paladins fell 15 to 50. The Ironmen swept each of the top five positions. PC girls fell to IHA 19 to 44 with Lila Moreeale pacing the #2 spot in 20:23:87.
