The Giants and Jets took the field as opponents at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night. The Jets won 24 - 21 in overtime to take bragging rights in the 2013 MetLife Bowl. However, the Jets’ bizarre quarterback competition vastly overshadows any sense of accomplishment.
Mark Sanchez has been historically bad over the last two years, but helped the Jets get to the NFC Championship game in back to back years preceding the nightmarish stretch.
On the other hand, Geno Smith, a highly touted rookie quarterback out of West Virginia, took the field Saturday with a chance to win the starting job.

Sanchez started the first two preseason games for the Jets and failed to impress, throwing one touchdown and one interception in each of his starts.
Saturday was Smith’s chance to start. The rookie signal caller drove the Jets’ offense downfield for a touchdown in the first quarter and things looked great, but that wouldn’t last. Smith threw three interceptions on his next 12 pass attempts and gave up a safety when he stepped out of bounds behind his own end zone.

The spotlight only got brighter on the Jets quarterback situation when Sanchez was injured late in the game on Saturday. As of Sunday evening, no specific injury has been identified.
The lackluster performance by both quarterbacks bidding for the starting job begs the question: Who should the Jets start at quarterback in week one?

Many believe that Geno Smith just isn’t ready yet. Sanchez started week one of his rookie year after only being the starter for one year, his senior season, at USC. In that season Sanchez completed 241 passes for 3,207 yards with 34 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Smith started at West Virginia for three seasons and completed 956 passes for 97 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. On top of that, Smith increased his completion percentage and touchdowns in each of those three seasons.
The fact remains that Mark Sanchez has started 68 games in the NFL, including six postseason games, and Smith hasn’t taken a single regular season snap…
