Justice for Gabby, School Ranking Drops and New Principal Top August News

Here are a few of the stories that caught readers' attention this month on Paramus Patch

A month after Paramus resident was fatally struck by Dover resident Philip Cise, Assembly members Connie Wagner and Tim Eustace, and Senator Bob Gordon are calling for justice and better accountability from the judicial system. 

Dover resident Philip Cise allegedly struck and killed Paramus resident Gabrielle Reuveni, a 2010 Paramus high school graduate  on July 14. Cise allegedly drove his pickup up truck over highway lines and struck and killed Reuveni. Cise is at was the Ann Klein Forensic Center to determine if he can stand trial.

was listed in the top 100 schools in the state of New Jersey in 2010. But according to the New Jersey Monthly’s biennial report released recently, PHS dropped 13 positions from 98 to 111 in 2011.

During the test period, PHS had 337 students enrolled with an average class size of 23.9 and an average combined SAT score for students of 1581. Paramus High offers 26 AP courses and has a cohort graduation rate for PHS was 93.45.

When East Brook students return back to school in September, they will recognize their new principal. After serving as Vice Principal for the past six years, Thomas Lobue was selected to become the school's next principal effective immediately.

Anthony Panico came out of retirement to serve as the new interim principal of Paramus High School for the 2012-2013 school year and replace Kurt Karcich who left for after the district his contract.

Panico comes to Paramus with over 40 years of experience in education having served as principal at River Dell High School for five years and Northern Valley Regional High School in Old Tappan for 22 years. Prior to that, he began his career in education as a science teacher and worked his way up to Director of Adult School and assistant principal.

Paramus Rescue Squad member Brian Gatens met with Virginia resident Jason Young for a second time after saving his life back in April. According to Rescue Squad Chief Joe Hamlin, Young was celebrating with friends at Remington’s, a country-and-western bar on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., on April 21, when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest. Gatens, who was visiting with friends, jumped into action and responded by administering CPR and using a defibrillator. 

Paramus PD will be running one officer shy for a while after Officer Benjamin Fox was assaulted by a Newark woman who was involved in a Friday morning car chase through multiple towns. Jhyda Colon is accused of punching Fox several times in the face and biting his forearm several times as the officer was attempting to gain control of her. 

Residents should be on high alert following an incident towards the end of August when a Westview Avenue home was burglarized by people pretending to be borough contractors, one of whom distracted the homeowner while two others stole jewelry. The man told the woman he was “sent by the borough to clear bushes in the rear of her house due to mosquitoes.

An elderly man drove a car into the  store at 651 Route 17 South on Thursday, causing damage to the front entrance and immediately left the scene, according to witnesses and police. The store's front door was shattered and knocked off its hinges and one of a pair of pillars at the entrance leaning at an angle, following the accident at approximately 12:30 p.m.

A cement truck took an unfortunate headlong tumble into a pit and ended up with its tires pointed skyward at a Nevada Street construction site Friday morning. The Tanis Concrete truck was making a delivery to a single family home being built on Nevada Street in Paramus when it fell into the construction site.  

Training and racing in triathlons has become something of a family tradition for brothers Kris, 29, Asa, 32, and 25-year old Edel Mendoza, three Paramus natives who are die-hard triathletes. This month they took on their greatest challenge, the Ironman U.S. Championship, one of the most arduous endurance competitions on the globe. Kris finished in 13:51:43 followed by Asa at 14:20:52 and Edel trailing in at 16:26:08.

Thousands of Paramus residents of all ages made their way to the green lawns and parking lot of Paramus Library Tuesday for the annual National Night Out. While Paramus police, fire, and ambulance members allowed children to try on uniforms and get up close and personal with safety equipment and vehicles, Mayor Richard LaBarbiera viewed the event as a family event coupled with entertainment.

Employees of Chick-fil-A at Paramus Park were bracing for the counter-reaction to Wednesday's National Appreciation Day in support of the fast food chain, a movement spurred by controversial statements opposing gay marriage made by the chain's CEO. The Paramus Park Chick-fil-A on August 3 swelled with customers after former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee called for a show of support to the embattled chain. Two days later, the nationally promoted came and went without only five couples taking turns joining lips in front of the Chick-fil-A restaurant.

With busy parents searching for the best back-to-school values, and a one-stop-shop for them and their children, the timing of UNIQLO's newest store could not be better. According to a press release from UNIQLO, the Paramus mall location will serve as the prototype for UNIQLO’s many future shopping mall locations in the U.S. 

On Aug 27, inside the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall Monday called the UNIQLO Pop-Up Cube to promote the grand opening of their first fullsize mall store Sep 28.

The Pop-Up Cube, which is located in the mall's food court, is offering shoppers a chance to preview some of UNIQLO's signature Japanese clothing line and a chance to purchase their iconic Premium Ultra Light Down Jackets. 

A Bergenfield man led police on a chase from New Milford through several Bergen towns before crashing in Ridgewood, according to police.

Kervin Paras, 19 of Bergenfield, was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center suffering from "non life-threatening injuries" after he lost control of the bike on Ackerman Avenue near Bellair Road,  Lt. Todd Harris said.
