Paramus Hit Hard by Power Outages, Downed Trees

Almost half of Paramus is without power this afternoon as PSE&G is reporting up to 10,000 residential power outages and full restoration could take several days as DPW staffing works to clear the many downed trees in town.

"It's been a long night and the light of day should bring many surprises as we start clean-up and restoring power," Mayor Richard LaBarbiera wrote on Facebook. "I must give a big shout out to OEM, emergency services, and essential employees. These people have been working all day and will continue through the night. Keep in mind, while they are attending to the needs of the residents their own families are in need as well. Remember this when you see them working tomorrow and give them a big thank you." 

For those residents seeking relief from the power outages, Garden State Plaza opened at 2pm on Tuesday and is offering charging stations throughout the mall, specifically near Playtown, Concierge, and around various seating areas.

GSP announced on Facebook that Nordstrom Cafe, Nordstrom E-Bar, Joe's American Grill, Cinnabon and Wendy's are all currently open.

Most of the mall has power, with the exception of the AMC movie theater addition, which will not reopen at 2 p.m,, according to mall spokesman Greg Udchitz in a northjersey.com report.

Both Bergen Town Center and Paramus Park remained closed on Tuesday.

“PSE&G will be working around the clock to assess the damage and restore service," Ralph LaRossa, PSE&G president, said in a press release Monday morning." Given the destructive nature of this storm, however, some customers may be without service for seven or more days. Our urban centers were especially hard hit as a result of substation flooding. One of our first priorities is to get those stations back in service.”  

At this time, no decision has been made whether area schools will open on Wednesday. 

“We have a long road ahead of us, but I have complete confidence we are going to come out of this better and stronger than before,” Gov. Chris Christie said in a northjersey.com report following a briefing this morning at the State Police’s emergency command center in West Trenton.
