Soccer Squads Advance in County Tournaments
Each week, Patch will look back at how the Spartans and Paladins performed on the field

With three out of four Paramus soccer teams competing in their respective County tournaments, all squads advanced to the next round with victories in the first match-ups.
Max Brodarzon has been on fire for the Paramus Spartans, leading the team with a hat trick in their 3-0 opening round win over Pascack Valley. He also contributed in the Spartans' 6-3 victory over Teaneck as well. Lucas Tasci netted a deuce with Benju Audi, Randy Casalias, Brodarzon and Tommy Casale hitting the remaing goals.
The Lady Spartans continue to follow the lead of scoring powerhouse Sarah Cortes who had a hat trick in their 6-0 blanketing of Westwood in their County opener. Rounding out the score were Victoria Poplaski, Noel Hodgins and Emily Colasante. Cortes also had a single goal in Paramus' victory over Teaneck, 8-1 as Hodgins and Colasante hit doubles. Kelsey Settecasi, Francesca DePalo and Bella Blanco-Rivas each had one. Nicole DePasquale recorded eight saves in the Lady Spartans lone loss of the week, 2-0 to Demarest.

In the Bergen County girls tourney, Paramus Catholic advanced to the Round of 16 as Kimmie Mignone, Delaney Suarez and Julianna Mascelli teamed up for a 5-0 shutout over Waldwick. The Laday Paladins then ran all over Teaneck in an 8-0 romp, scoring five goals in the first half. Chelsi Nurse came off the bench to contribute two goals with the remainder netted by Gabby Villar, Annalyse Vassallo, Suarez, Mascelli, Mignone and Kelly Banas.
The only Paramus soccer squad to not appear in the County tournament this season was the Paramus Catholic boys team but the Paladins had an outstanding week as they defeated Teaneck 4-1 behind Jordan Saling’s deuce with Jose Meza and Luis Marin adding into the mix. Saling then contributed in PC's 2-2 tie with Don Bosco after double overtime. Wayne Evers also scored to force the overtime periods.

Jabrill Peppers showed why he is one of the most sought after cornerbacks as he led the PC Paladins with four touchdowns in the gridiron 42-10 victory over Ridgewood. The junior athlete took the ball in for a 2-yard touchdown run and followed it up with a diving touchdown catch between defenders with just seconds left before halftime. The Paladins would dump another 21 points on the Maroons with passing strikes from quarterback Steve Shanley to Najee Clayton and James Colacci. Dan Conte kicked in all six extra points.
Paramus moved its gridiron record to an even 2-2 as Brandon Sebahie scored twice to lead the Spartans 27-14 over Teaneck. Tyler Smith had a 1-yard run and Matt Tozzi a 2-yard run. Jeff Carpenter was three for four on extra points.
Paramus Catholic split their four matches on the volleyball court this week with wins over Bergenfield (25-13, 25-18) and Teaneck (25-15, 18-25, 25-8) before faltering against Glen Rock (25-23, 20-25, 23-25) and IHA (19-25, 13-25). Georgette Smith recorded 42 kills and 3 blocks; Catherine Mulick 11 digs; Caitlin Hall 39 assists; Robin Gonsalves 11 digs; and Jessica Breen 28 digs.
Paramus was able to take down Teaneck (25-11, 25-15) and Indian Hills (25-5, 25-12) this week, splitting their three-game series as they fell to Demarest (18-25, 17-25). Maria Bellinger recorded 14 kills; Stephanie Garino 35 assists and 9 digs; and Jessica Chakonis had 22 digs.
At the Wild Safari Invitational (Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson), Paramus girls cross country finished in 10th for the Varsity B division as Lindsay Lucas paced the pack in 19:41 for an eighth place finish. Teammate Jolie Bartner followed at 20:10 for the number 18 spot. The boys squad finished 9th overall as Mike Secreti had the fastest North Jersey time, coming in third at 15:49, just a mere 23 seconds ahead of teammate Erik Helstrom (fourth plce in 16:12).
Prior to the rain setting in all week, Paramus tennis competed in the Bergen County Girls tournament but none of the squad advanced past the first two rounds.
Paramus Catholic tennis shut out Westwood this week, 5-0.
