Former Parsippany Cop Found Drunk In Idling Car Not Guilty Of DWI: Report

William Makowitz was acquitted as state could not confirm if he had driven or intended to drive car, report says.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. – A former deputy police chief from Parsippany who was charged with driving while intoxicated in January was acquitted last week.

According to nj.com, the state could not prove William Makowitz had “ever driven the car or had any intention to.”

Police found Makowitz, 72, of Sparta, at 4:04 a.m. on Jan. 27 inside a car parked on Parsippany Road at the Elks Lodge, according to previous police reports.

Police saw Makowitz in the driver’s seat with his head tilted back and was unresponsive.

After several attempts, police woke up Makowitz who was later arrested for driving while intoxicated and failure to submit a breath test.

Makowitz retired from the force in 2006 as Deputy Police Chief.
