Gourmet Cafe Credits Loyal Clientele For Survival During Pandemic
The owner of Parsippany's Gourmet Cafe said the community has been a huge source of support for his business
PARSIPPANY, NJ—Matthew Pierone started out in the restaurant business at 13 as a dish washer and worked his way up to owning his own place, The Gourmet Cafe. As 2019 drew to a close, the restaurant was in a great position.
"We ended last year really strong," Pierone said, "and this year started off very good, as well."
Then, March 17 came, and the Gourmet Cafe, like most other businesses, was forced to shut its doors as the pandemic spread across the area. Suddenly, the only business available was takeout.

"It was scary," said Pierone, "wondering how long it was going to last. I sent out an email right away reminding people we are open for takeout, and I had to start posting on Facebook much more. Fortunately, our customers responded immediately. "
Gourmet Cafe began outdoor seating this summer, when it was allowed, and found that business was not as brisk. The longtime restaurateur thinks he knows the culprit.

"It's the summer, so people are away, even during the pandemic," he said, "so we are anticipating an uptick in business this fall."
Gourmet Cafe is setup to seat 25 percent capacity indoors, and Pierone said that extensive sanitation procedures, always part of the operation, have been increased.
"We even disinfect the menus after every use," he said.
Pierone, who opened Gourmet Cafe 13 years ago at 136 Baldwin Rd., describes the restaurant as Italian food with special flair.
"It's an eclectic menu, but all the classics are there," he said. "I have the favorites, but always have a special lined up, too."
Pierone said he's optimistic that full capacity in-person dining will eventually return. In the meantime, he credits a secret ingredient for his restaurant's survival and success.
"This has shown me how lucky I am to have such a loyal clientele," said Pierone. "They've kept us going."
