Wrong-Way Driver Charged After Fatal Head-On Crash In Morris Co.

Officials said the man showed signs of being under the influence after the crash, which happened on I-80 West and killed another driver.

PARSIPPANY, NJ — A Parsippany man faces a reckless vehicular homicide charge after causing a fatal wrong-way crash on Route 80 last week, officials said.

The crash happened early on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 2 on Interstate 80 in Rockaway Township. Investigators said 45-year-old Victor Peters was driving east in the westbound lanes, and collided head-on with a Ford pickup truck going west.

The driver of the truck, 31-year-old Destinn McKnight of East Stroudsburg, Penn., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Peters, who was driving a Mercedes SUV, "exhibited signs of being under the influence at the scene," according to a news release from the Morris County Prosecutor's Office. First responders took him to Morristown Medical Center to be treated for serious injuries.

Peters has been charged with second-degree reckless vehicular homicide and several motor vehicle violations, officials said Monday.

Both drivers were the only people in their vehicles at the time of the crash.
