MANCHESTER, NJ — A Point Pleasant man was injured Wednesday when he lost control of a dump truck on Route 70 as he tried to turn into the entrance Ocean County Landfill and it overturned, Manchester police said.

David Santana, 65, suffered several injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening as a result of the crash, Manchester Capt. Albert Vega said. Santana was taken to Ocean University Medical Center in Brick for treatment, Vega said.

Santana was driving a black 2004 Mack dump truck west on Route 70 "at a high rate of speed," Vega said, shortly before noon as he approached the intersection with Green Acres Road, which provides access to the Ocean County Landfill.

As Santana braked to make the left turn into the entrance, the excessive speed caused him to lose control of the truck and it turned onto its passenger side, Vega said.

Route 70 was partially closed for about three hours during the crash investigation and cleanup.

Assisting at the scene were emergency medical technicians and firefighters from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, Manchester Volunteer Fire Department, Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, Priced Rite Towing, Accurate Towing, and the New Jersey State Department of Transportation.

Manchester Patrolman Brendan Brush of the Traffic Safety Unit is investigating but the unsafe speed appears to be the primary contributing factor from the preliminary findings, Vega said.
