Brick Man Charged With DWI After Route 88 Bridge Crash In Point Pleasant

POINT PLEASANT, NJ — A Brick Township man has been charged with driving while intoxicated following a crash Sunday evening on the Route 88 bridge that sent one person to the hospital, Point Pleasant police said Monday.

Daniel O'Neill, 30, was charged following the crash that happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Capt. Christopher Leonhardt said.

The crash happened on the westbound lanes of the Route 88 bridge, Leonhardt said, and involved two cars. One car — driven by O'Neill — overturned, Leonhardt said. He and the passenger had to be helped out of the car.

A passenger in the second vehicle was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, Leonhardt said.

During the investigation, Police Officer Robert Stowe detected signs of alcohol impairment in O'Neill and he was arrested, Leonhardt said. He was processed at police headquarters and released in accordance with John’s Law.

The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming, Leonhardt said.
