81-Year-Old Stabbed, Scotch Plains Man Charged In Attempted Murder: Police

An elderly man was stabbed multiple times in Scotch Plains on Monday.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — An 81-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in Scotch Plains early Monday morning, said police.

At around 1:40 a.m. on Monday, Scotch Plains Police Officers Ed Budzinkis and Krysti Janusz went to 441 Hunter Ave. where they found the elderly man suffering from stab wounds to the face and upper torso.

He was bleeding profusely and was immediately provided medical aid, according to the report.

47-year-old Farid C. Basma, who also lives at 441 Hunter Ave., was placed under arrest and taken to police headquarters.

Scotch Plains EMS and JFK hospital paramedics took the man to University Hospital in Newark. It was determined that he had two stab wounds to the check, one to the top of his shoulder and a cut to the face.

The Union County Sheriff's Department found a stainless steel Tramontina knife with an eight-inch blade and identified it as the weapon used in the assault.

Basma was not injured and was charged by the Union County Prosecutors Office with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree aggravated assault, third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and fourth-degree possession of a weapon.

All charges were placed on a warrant and Basma was taken to a secure facility in Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth.
