SUMMIT, NJ — This week, Summit is joining the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation for the "Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters" event, which began on Sunday.

The memorial bell, located at the Summit fire headquarters at 396 Broad Street, will be illuminated in red until Sunday, Oct. 9 to honor fallen firefighters across the country.

Every October, the National Fallen Fighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend — the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. This tradition of lighting up fire departments and homes in red has been a tradition since 2017.

“We are proud to participate in this important event honoring our fallen brothers and sisters,” said Fire Chief Eric Evers. “Though we are dedicated to serving the community in this way, we know this job doesn’t come without risks. Our hearts are with those who have lost a friend or family member who served as a firefighter, and we hope this event honors their memory.”
