Summit Sees 2 COVID-Related Deaths In February, Decrease In Cases

Two more Summit residents died of COVID in February, but overall case numbers have significantly decreased, Westfield Health Dept. says.

SUMMIT, NJ — As it's been two years since the first COVID-19 case was reported in New Jersey, cases have finally began to dramatically decrease in Summit, according to a recent report from the Westfield Regional Health Department.

Summit saw two additional COVID-19 associated deaths in February, with both residents aged 80 or older. This brings the total number of Summit residents who have died from COVID-19 to 33. However, overall case numbers have significantly dropped this past month.

As the State of New Jersey Health Emergency has been lifted, Summit will no longer release COVID-19 updates unless a health emergency is reinstated. Information on COVID-19 cases and vaccinated residents can be found on the State of New Jersey dashboard: https://covid19.nj.gov/

The Health Department reported 107 new cases of COVID in Summit during February, which is down from 851 new cases in January.

  • 15 cases aged four and younger
  • 14 cases aged five to nine
  • 16 cases aged 10 to 14
  • Five cases aged 15 to 19

Past Two Years

According to Health Department's report, worldwide, 440M COVID-19 cases have been reported, along with 5.97M reported deaths. In the U.S., 79.1M reported cases of COVID-19 have been logged and more than 955,000 US citizens have lost their lives to COVID-19 over the past 24 months.

In NJ, 1,875,575 cases of COVID-19 have been reported with 32,982 new COVID-19 related deaths.

One in four Union County residents have had a reportable, positive COVID-19 test and one in 237 Union County residents have died from the virus over the past two years.

In Summit, a total of 4,275 covid cases have been reported throughout the past 24 months (18.8% of residents using 2020 census data).

The Westfield Regional Health Department has had a total of 20,718 COVID-19 cases reported in the communities it serves over the past 24 months.

Vaccinations Update

The Westfield Regional Health Department has administered 3,287 vaccinations to residents during the pandemic.

Statewide, daily immunizations this week decreased by 4 percent over last week and averaged 13.7K a day (down from 28.7K a day four weeks ago). 78.9 percent of all NJ residents aged five and older are now fully vaccinated.

Locally, 74 percent of children aged five to 11 have received at least one dose of vaccine (up from 72 percent last month) and 66 percent are fully vaccinated.

In Summit, 65 percent of children aged five to 11 that are eligible for a booster have received one.
