TEANECK, NJ — A path is laid for a major expansion of Holy Name Hospital, as the Teaneck township council approved expanding the zoning district around the campus, a report said.

Holy Name needed council's approval to rezone part of its current campus and some property it owns to expand the hospital.

Zoning ordinances regulate how land is used, whether it be for commercial, residential, or industrial purposes. Ordinances might also restrict how tall buildings can be.

There are four phases to the hospital's plan as it currently stands, which estimates a build-out of 10 to 20 years. Among the new elements of the hospital's campus would be two nine-story hospital buildings, three new medical office buildings and a number of renovations to existing structures and access points.

A number of residents, including a group called "Good Neighbors of Teaneck," have asked for more room between the hospital campus and their neighborhood, NorthJersey.com reported. Others are in favor, and are worried the hospital may leave Teaneck if it cannot grow.

Twenty-three residents spoke at Tuesday's meeting. Of these people, 12 were in favor of the ordinance and 11 opposed, according to NorthJersey.com.
