TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Ocean County Board of Health is scheduled to consider leasing the Toms River Animal Shelter from Toms River when the board meets Wednesday morning.

The agenda for the meeting, set for 9:30 a.m. at the Board of Health offices at 175 Sunset Ave., Toms River, lists the resolution "to enter into a lease agreement" with Toms River to operate the shelter.

The Board of Health discussion comes as a group of Toms River residents is collecting signatures on a petition to overturn the Toms River Township Council's approval of an ordinance to lease the shelter.

The recall petition must collect 3,079 signatures from registered voters in Toms River to force the council to either repeal the ordinance or put the matter to Toms River voters in November.

The group collecting signatures was inspired by the successful recall petition that forced the Toms River council to repeal the ordinance earlier this year that cut two captains' positions from the police department roster.
