One of the most common ghost tales surrounding Clinton Road is the story of a young boy’s spirit who lives below one of the road’s bridges. Legend has it that the Ghost Boy of Clinton Road will return coins tossed over the side of the bridge to morbidly curious visitors.

While legend doesn’t necessarily pinpoint which bridge the ghoul spends his time under, Weird NJ, an outlet that reports on supernatural happenings around the state, says that the bridge at Dead Man’s Curve is the most popular spot for amateur ghost hunters.

“We were surprised and delighted to see just how many people had recently stopped by to test the validity of the legend of the Ghost Boy of Clinton Road,” one report read. “As we peered over the guardrail and down into the tea-colored water of the stream, we could clearly see dozens of coins resting on the bottom among the stones of the creekbed. There is no way of knowing how many appearances the Ghost Boy made when summoned by the coin tossers.”

Some say that the boy was hit by a car on the road decades ago, throwing him off the bridge and killing him, leaving him to haunt the area for eternity. A few legends say that the boy will push visitors off the bridge and into the water, in an attempt to save them from a similar fate.

Clinton Road’s Cross Castle

Cross Castle off Clinton Road is said to have had many supernatural occurrences during the late 20th century, including reports of satanic rituals and unexplained lights.

The castle-like mansion was built in 1905 by Richard James Cross. After a fire turned the place into ruins, it became a hub for curious teenagers, ghost hunters, and, reportedly, satanic cults.

Some witnesses said that they had seen dead livestock in the area, claiming that these animals were sacrifices for satanic cults. Others have claimed to have seen the cultists themselves; however, some believe these were not satanic cultists, but members of the KKK.

Reports of strange scripture written on the walls, possessed teenagers, and more were made regarding Cross Castle. While the building was knocked down in 1988, some say the “bad vibes” still live in its foundation, according to Weird NJ.

Some even say the castle rebuilds itself for one night a year, Oct. 30.

Clinton Road’s Hell Hound

Another popular legend surrounding the 10-mile stretch of road is its infamous Hell Hound. This creepy canine has reportedly chased drivers for miles down the road, with some believers claiming it to be The Jersey Devil.

There are several reports describing the beast, claiming it to look like a white wolf, with red and yellowish eyes. Some have even said it doesn’t run after drivers, but floats.

Other Spooky Happenings

Other supernatural and scary reports around Clinton Road include ghostly park rangers, phantom cars, UFOs, mind-bending witches, and more.

While the details on many of these instances vary, one similar sentiment echoes through most witnesses — If you’re traveling on Clinton Road, stay in your car.
