Press release from St. Joseph's Health:

WAYNE, NJ – On April 14, St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center, part of St. Joseph’s Health, announced the opening of the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbarics, a specialized wound care and treatment center dedicated to the care of patients with chronic or non-healing wounds. The center houses two hyperbaric oxygen chambers, one of just a few centers in the region to provide cutting-edge treatment for effective healing.

Chronic wounds often arise from underlying medical issues like diabetes, poor circulation, pressure ulcers, or weakened immune systems, which disrupt the normal healing process. According to the American College of Surgeons, more than 6.5 million Americans suffer from chronic non-healing wounds, which can lead to other medical problems.

“We are thrilled to offer the latest healing technology to patients with wounds that may not have responded to other treatments,” said Michael Cairoli, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, St. Joseph’s Wayne Medical Center. “Our goal is to aggressively treat wounds to optimize outcomes and restore quality of life for our patients.”

The new outpatient wound healing center provides a comprehensive approach to care, coordinating traditional and advanced therapies that aid and accelerate the healing process. The multidisciplinary, highly skilled team features general, vascular and plastic surgeons; podiatrists; infectious disease physicians; and certified nurses and technicians with advanced training in wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hyperbaric therapy (HBO2) uses oxygen under pressure to enhance the body’s natural ability to heal. The treatment works by increasing oxygen levels in damaged tissues, stimulating growth of new blood vessels and enhancing immune cell function. These are all important factors that contribute to wound healing and increase quality of life in patients.

“Since non-healing wounds rarely result from a single cause, we treat the whole person, not just the wound,” Scott Wessner, DO, Medical Director of the Center for Wound Healing and Hyperbarics. “Our physicians work closely to develop an effective, individualized treatment plan that focuses not only on the wound, but also on managing any underlying conditions in order to accelerate total healing.”
