'The Watcher' Based On True Westfield Story Greenlit For Season 2

After soaring to the top of Netflix's streaming charts, 'The Watcher' has been renewed for a second season.

WESTFIELD, NJ — In the weeks after its initial release, "The Watcher" became Netflix's #1 most streamed show and received more than 340 million hours of viewership.

Off the tails of this success, Netflix has announced that a second season is coming.

"Following the record-breaking success of DAHMER - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Ryan Murphy & Ian Brennan will create two more installments that will focus on other monstrous figures who have impacted society,” Netflix said in a tweet. “A second season of The Watcher has also been greenlit!"

Now that "Monster" will become an anthology series, similar to Murphy's other series like "American Horror Story" and "American Crime Story," it is unclear whether "The Watcher" will follow this trope and stray away from the original story that is based on a real Westfield home.

Although the show took some liberties, the first seven episodes of "The Watcher" was largely based in fact, as it follows the real-life story of a family that purchases a home in Westfield and starts receiving creepy letters from someone named "The Watcher."

Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale co-star as Nora and Dean Brannock in the show, inspired by Maria and Derek Broaddus who were the actual owners of 657 Boulevard in Westfield. Jennifer Coolidge also stars in the show as realtor Karen Calhoun.

Patch broke down what aspects of the show were accurate to the real story and what was fictionalized.

Because Netflix did not offer details on whether "The Watcher" will become an anthology series, it's possible that a second season will continue with some of the same cast and characters and pick up where it left off.

After the Netflix show aired, the actual Westfield home, which now has new owners, became a tourist attraction, with people from all over driving to the house to take photos. Many Westfield residents, however, were not thrilled with the attention the town was receiving.

Saturday Night Live also recently released a spoof of the popular show, changing the name to "The Looker." Host Amy Schumer plays the mother and cast members James Austin Johnson, Chloe Fineman and Marcello Hernández play the rest of the family.

In this comedic trailer, "the looker" is spying on the family and reveals some embarrassing things that Schumer is doing around the house, such as eating exorbitant amounts of food and having bathroom troubles.
