Winter Storm This Weekend: What To Expect In Westfield

Heavy rain and a wintery mix is expected to hit Union County overnight Sunday and into Monday. Find out more storm details here.

WESTFIELD, NJ — The National Weather Service is reporting a strong storm will hit the northeast Sunday night and continue into Martin Luther King Day.

The storm that will pass through Westfield is expected to begin with a brief snowfall Sunday evening before changing over to a wintry mix and heavy rain. It is expected to last until Monday afternoon. Wind gusts of up to 40 mph are also expected.

In case of any power outages, Union County residents are reminded to take basic safety precautions when using emergency generators, candles, kerosene lamps and other alternative power or light sources.

Basic emergency generator safety measures include:

  • Never place a generators anywhere inside a building. That includes basements, garages and sheds.
  • Never place a generator next to a building. Carbon monoxide gas can seep into adjacent buildings and collect indoors. Always check the manufacturer’s manual for specific instructions.

Westfield Police Department announced that the Department of Public Works is salting main roads, hills and known problem areas Saturday afternoon in anticipation of the storm. The Township urges residents to secure all outdoor furniture and garbage/recycling bins.

Zone 1 recycling in Westfield will remain on schedule for Monday's collection. Residents in this zone are asked to secure all recyclables inside a closed container and, if possible, wait until Monday morning to place items on the curb. Collection begins at 6:00 a.m.
