Car Carrier Catches Fire On Route 17, Traffic Snarled: Police

A car-carrying tractor trailer caught on fire on Route 17, prompting lane closures, Saddle River police said.

SADDLE RIVER, NJ — A tractor trailer carrying several hybrid vehicles was heavily damaged when it caught fire Wednesday morning on Route 17 in Saddle River, destroying most of the cars on board, Police Chief Jason Cosgriff said.

Several police and fire departments responded to the fire that led to significant backup of traffic, as nearly all lanes were closed until the fire was extinguished, Cosgriff said.

The car-carrying trailer experienced a mechanical failure resulting in a fire by the wheels and tires; the fire spread to the vehicles being carried, which were then towed away, police said.
