Celebrating Earth Day

The Hillsdale Environmental Commission offered area residents a fun way to honor our planet and beautify our community.

Cultivating the spirit of Earth Day, the Hillsdale Environmental Commission gave out free bare root seedlings of five varieties—dogwood, hackberry, hickory, oak and paw paw—of native trees to area residents from Hillsdale and nearby communities.

Held at the Hillsdale train station on Saturday, April 23, from 10am-12pm, the event was a partnership of the Environmental Commission with the NJ Tree Recovery Campaign and the Arbor Day Foundation. About 250 saplings were distributed, along with instructions on how to plant them.

Everyone seemed excited to get their hands dirty. “We can’t wait to go home and plant these,” said one grandmom, who came with her daughter and granddaughter to pick up their seedlings.

“This is great,” said another resident who brought his two young daughters. “Thank you so much for doing this.”
