Cleaning Lady Stole From River Vale Home: Police

The resident became suspicious when money went missing and installed a video camera, which caught her in the act, cops say.

RIVER VALE, NJ - A 56-year-old Garfield woman faces charges for allegedly stealing $900 from the River Vale home she was hired to clean, according to police.

Around 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 11, a Holiday Court resident arrived at the police department to report that he believed his cleaning lady, Ana Mata, was stealing money from his home, police said. After growing suspicious, he recently installed a video camera, which captured footage of her stealing, police said.

Officers responded to the home, approached her as she was leaving and advised her of the accusation, police said. After that, she removed the stolen money from her pocket and was placed under arrest, police said.

Mata was charged with theft and issued a court date of Nov. 20, police said.
