Bank Donates $25K To Marcal Paper Plant Fire Victims
A massive seven-alarm fire destroyed the Marcal Paper plant in Elmwood Park Jan. 30.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Spencer Savings Bank donated $25,000 recently to the former employees who worked at the Marcel Paper plant in Elmwood Park after a massive fire destroyed the plant in January.
"This will go to all the employees that need it the most — our associates that lost their jobs due to the fire," said Rob Baron, president and CEO of Soundview Paper Co., "We can rebuild buildings, but we can't replace people. We are making every effort to make sure this isn't the last chapter at Marcal."
An additional $5,000 Spencer gave to host a brunch for the dozens of first responders who battled the blaze for hours all night into the following morning.

Whipping winds blew embers from the fire into the area, creating a concern for nearby homeowners, according to a CBS2 reported when the fire occurred. No one was injured, according to published reported. (See related: Massive Fire Consumes Marcal Paper Plant In Elmwood Park)
"We were incredibly saddened to hear about the tragedy. The iconic Marcal Paper Mill was a historic landmark and staple in the community for decades," stated Jose B. Guerrero, chairman, president, and CEO of Spencer Savings Bank. "As a community bank, we were very happy to help the employees who lost their jobs. We wish the Marcal company much success in rebuilding!"
