FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ — A freezing dog is warm again after firefighters rescued him from an icy lake in Franklin Lakes on Sunday, firefighters said.

"The Franklin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department responded to a unique call for help—a dog had fallen through the ice and swam to a nearby island," the department said this week.

The island in Shadow Lake was approximately 75 feet offshore, they said.

"They navigated their way to the dog while awaiting Utility 344’s arrival with our Rapid Deployment Craft and extra manpower," firefighters said. "With some teamwork—and a few treats to win the dog’s trust—Firefighters Jost and Chazen were able to leash the pup and bring him safely back to shore."

The department thanked the police and the Franklin Lakes Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their help.

"Another successful rescue showing the strength of teamwork and dedication of our Volunteers!" they wrote.
