Efforts Planned To Help Franklin Lakes Church Rebuild After Fire

Cyclebar and Blue Moon Mexican Cafe plan to donate a portion of its sales on Feb. 9 to help Most Blessed Sacrament Church.

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ – Two fundraiser efforts have been planned to help a Franklin Lakes church rebuild after it was destroyed by a fire in December.

On Feb. 9, Cyclebar in Wyckoff plans to give 100 percent of proceeds from its 12:30 p.m. class to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, while Blue Moon Mexican Café will donate 20 percent of its sales on lunch, dinner, take-out orders, deliveries and gift cards.

Since the Dec. 11 fire, which authorities say was intentionally set by James Mayers, a 26-year-old Franklin Lakes man, the church has created a committee to oversee rebuilding efforts.

According to the Archdiocese of Newark, rebuilding efforts will be directed by the parish decisions will be made by Most Blessed Sacrament Church.

“As the fire occurred just a month ago, the construction timeline is still under review,” an Archdiocese spokeswoman said. “The church’s reconstruction will be supported through insurance, gifts to the MBS Restoration Fund, and prior donations to the Parish’s capital campaign, which was intended to support church renovations as well as the construction of a new chapel and community center.”

She also added, “The pastor, Fr. John Job, staff of the Most Blessed Sacrament Church, and the Archdiocese of Newark are most appreciative of the outpouring of support and prayers from parishioners, the community, and neighboring parishes, houses of worship, and religious leaders. Many already have reached out to help.”

Anyone who wishes to make a donation, can mail a check to Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 787 Franklin Lake Road, Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417. Make sure to specify "MBS Restoration" on checks.

The church was formed in the early 1960s due to a growing need in the town, and its current building was constructed in the early 1980s, according to the church's website.

A parish center and Catholic school on the property were not damaged. On the day of the fire, classes were cancelled at the the school, which serves students in Pre-K through 8, but have since resumed, according to the Archdiocese of Newark.

Mass services, as well as other parish activities, have gone on as planned in alternate locations.

  • Sunday Mass, including the 5:30 p.m. Saturday Vigil Mass, will be held in the gymnasium at the Academy of the Most Blessed Sacrament.
  • Daily Mass, including the 9:00 a.m. Saturday Mass, will be held in the parish center.
  • There is no change to the frequency of Masses or times. Check mostblessedsacrament.ws or the church bulletin for Mass schedules.
  • All major holiday Masses including the regularly scheduled Christmas and Christmas Eve Masses also will be celebrated in the school gymnasium. Consult the bulletin online for the complete Christmas Mass schedule, including the children's Christmas Eve Mass, and Parish Advent Confessions.
  • While weddings and funeral Masses will be relocated to neighboring parishes, Most Blessed Sacrament staff will continue to coordinate music and logistics for these events.
  • The Sacrament of Baptism will be celebrated in the gymnasium during Masses.
  • There is no change to the many parish ministries of Most Blessed Sacrament, which take place in the parish center and at other facilities.
