Counterfeit Cash Used At 3 Bergen County Businesses, Police Say

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Three men tried to use counterfeit $100 bills at several businesses in Glen Rock last week — including for Italian ices, police say.

Police said that last Tuesday, they responded around 10 p.m. to a CVS to take theft report. Employees told them that a man entered the store and bought $500 in gift cards with counterfeit $100 bills. The Detective Bureau began reviewing surveillance footage to try to identify the man.

Then, this past Sunday, the police got two more reports of bogus Benjamins — this time, with three men involved, they say.

They say that before 10 a.m., they headed to Catalano Coffee, where employees said that on Wednesday, a man came in and bought coffee with a counterfeit $100.

Within a few minutes, two other men came in to use $100 bills, but were denied.

Then, police say, just before 5 p.m. on Sunday, the owner of Rita’s Italian Ice made a similar report. Police say that on Wednesday, "the same three males that passed a counterfeit $100 bill at Catalano Coffee also purchased Italian ice using counterfeit money."

The Detective Bureau is investigating.
