QUEENS, NY — The New York Mets have landed star pitcher Max Scherzer, but it didn't come cheap.

Scherzer reportedly signed a three-year, $130 million contract. His $43.3 million average annual value is the largest in baseball history, and it's also the largest contract the franchise has ever given to a free agent, according to The Athletic.

The contract was first reported by Andy Martino and Jon Heyman, and later confirmed by Ken Rosenthal. According to Heyman, very little is left before the contract is official.

"Minor details to go only," he said.

The deal is said to include both a full no-trade clause, and also an opt-out clause after year two. His first two years with the Mets will see him make $87 million, Heyman reports.

Scherzer, now 37, is a multi-time Cy Young winner and widely regarded as a future Hall of Famer, and one of the best starters in the modern era. He posted a 15-4 record last season to go along with a 2.46 ERA with both the Nationals and Dodgers.

He finished third in Cy Young voting and, according to Audacy, has finished in the top-3 in five of the last six season. He won the award in 2013, 2016 and 2017.

The Mets were active in free agency before the Scherzer deal. New general manager Billy Eppler has agreed to three deals in addition to star righty's, including outfielders Starling Marte and Mark Canha, as well as infielder Eduardo Escobar.
