Missing NJ Man Shows Up At Random Home, Asks To Charge Cell Phone, Police Say

When a man knocked on a stranger's door in Bergen County, the homeowner tried to help. It turned out he'd been reported missing.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — A stranger who knocked on a Glen Rock resident's door on Saturday turned out to be man whose family reported him missing, police said.

Police said that on Saturday, just before 5:30 p.m., they were dispatched to Doremus Avenue to check on the welfare of a man who had knocked on a resident’s door asking for help in charging a cellphone.

The resident told police that due to a language barrier, it was hard to communicate with the man, but "they were concerned that the man was in distress."

The resident gave the man a blanket and water, and allowed him to charge his phone on the front porch while they called police.

A Spanish speaking officer was able to determine that the man suffered from cognitive disabilities and had been reported missing by his family in Franklin Lakes, police said.

An officer from the Franklin Lakes Police Department headed to the scene and took the man home, police say.

The Glen Rock police handled 290 calls for service during the week that ended Sunday, they noted.
