BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A four-alarm fire devoured the beautiful old brownstone at 257 Hancock St., near Tompkins Ave., late Tuesday evening, injuring six civilians and four firefighters, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

All the injuries were minor, an FDNY spokesman told Patch. He said everyone wounded in the Tuesday-night fire was expected to survive.

The brownstone fire broke out around 10 p.m., the FDNY reported online, and was not brought under control until an hour-and-a-half later, around 11:30 p.m.

By the time the flames were extinguished, they had torn all the way through the building's four stories and its shaft, the FDNY reported.

The brownstone at 257 Hancock is part of Bed-Stuy's landmarked historic zone, city records show.
