Brooklyn DA's Office Now Offering High School Internships in Winter and Spring

Brooklyn students interested in the criminal justice system can spend a week working at the DA's office in February or April.

BROOKLYN, NY — Adding to its existing summer internship program, the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office will host two new, week-long internships next spring and summer for high school juniors and seniors interested in the criminal justice system, the department announced Tuesday.

The internships will run from Feb. 21-24 and from April 10-14. They'll take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and on Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

During each period, interns will work with Assistant District Attorneys and other staffers, helping to provide paralegal or clerical work, working on case preparation, discovery and file maintenance, and observing sentencing in court, among other activities.

The internship is unpaid, but participants will receive a MetroCard to cover transportation costs.

Applicants must live and attend school in Brooklyn. To apply, you must submit your most recent high school transcript, an up-to-date-resume, two letters of recommendation (such as from a teacher, coach or mentor), and a 300 word essay explaining why you want to intern with the Brooklyn DA's office and what impact you think the internship will have on you professionally and personally.

Applications can be emailed to hsinternships@brooklynda.org, and will be accepted between Nov. 1 and Dec. 9.

The office expects to accept about 20 students for both the February and April programs, but anyone accepted must choose between one of the two sessions.

(Two other notes: the DA's office is asking applicants to submit all of their materials at the same time. Also, you'll need to submit a KCDA Application Cover Sheet with your application. The sheet will be posted on the DA's internship website on Nov. 1.)

If you have questions about the internship program, you can call Felicia Harris with the DA's office at 718-250-4873.

More information is available on the DA's internship website, or you could take a look at this fact-sheet detailing the internship and application process.
