Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
- While gun violence across New York City surged in the beginning of the pandemic, shootings and homicides in Brooklyn saw a noteworthy decline in 2021. The trend has continued into 2022 where shootings are down 20 percent in Brooklyn compared to only 7 percent across the other boroughs. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez has made a pledge to lead the "'most progressive' prosecutor's office in the country," and has not changed his tone in the face of Mayor Eric Adams's plans for tougher crime responses. (The Guardian US)
- A new restaurant in Bed-Stuy is bringing popular vegan eats to Brooklyn. Uptown Veg has been serving food in Harlem for almost 30 years, and the expansion to Bed-Stuy represents the eatery's first since opening in 1994. A grand opening will be held on Saturday at the 364 Lewis Ave. location. (Patch)
- New York City's first geothermal-powered hotel is coming to Bushwick. The eight-story hotel has been planned at 27 Stewart Ave. since 2015. Geothermal technology is a highly efficient, clean technology, but is so far highly uncommon in New York City. (Brooklyn Paper)
- Three schools in Brooklyn are adding food pantries to supply necessary groceries to thousands of families. Vanessa Bracetty-Ormsby founded a nonprofit called Expecting Relief and opened the first pantry at her former elementary school, P.S. 147 Isaac Remsen. The organization has since opened two more pantries in Brooklyn as part of their collaboration with Stop & Shop. (PIX11 New York News)
- The Brooklyn Record Exchange is expanding with a second location in Greenpoint. The record store opened its first shop in 2019 as a collaboration with local label Mexican Summer. The new location opens today at 87 Guernsey St. (The Vinyl Factory)

Are you a Brooklyn resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
