Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
- The contractor who built a faulty patio wall that killed a 5-year-old girl in Bushwick in 2019 is facing manslaughter charges. Alysson Pinto-Chaumana was standing next to the 68-inch wall with her mother when it toppled over, crushing her skull. It was revealed that the wall was built without a permit, and without adhesive support or reinforcing bars required under New York City building codes. (Patch)
- Local Park Slope leader joined immigrant rights advocates in speaking out against Mayor Eric Adams' decision to appoint Laurie Cumbo as the Cultural Affairs commissioner. Councilmember Shahana Hanif wrote, in a letter to Mayor Adams, ""I cannot in good conscience support someone who has made comments pitting one group against another or someone who has actively fought in the Council to restrict the rights of immigrants," pointing to Cumbo's opposition to a non-citizen voting bill. Cumbo is the latest of Adams' appointees to come under scrutiny upon their assumption of respective roles. (Patch)
- A fundraiser spearheaded by Greenpoint residents has raised over $20,000 for Ukrainian refugees arriving in Poland. Greepointers partnered with the Polish and Slavic Federal Credit Union to begin a fundraiser for Caritas, a nonprofit providing direct aid for Ukrainians crossing the Polish border. According to the United Nations, over 1.8 million Ukrainians have fled to Poland alone. (Brooklyn Paper)
