Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
- The NYPD arrested a suspect in connection with a Jan. 2 shooting that left a woman and her dog dead in Clinton Hill. Police responded to a 911 call at a smoke shop on DeKalb Avenue, where they found the 36-year-old victim unresponsive with a gunshot wound to her torso. The NYPD arrested 36-year-old Namel Colon on Feb. 22 and charged him with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. (AMNY)
- Detectives are looking for two suspects who stabbed a 53-year-old man during a car sale that went wrong on Feb. 20. At approximately 4:40 p.m., the victim met with the suspects to discuss the sale of a BMW at 2427 Hubbard St. before the suspects stabbed the man multiple times and drove off in the victim’s 2013 Infinity JX35. Anyone with information in regards to this incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). (AMNY)
- Police arrested 30-year-old FDNY EMT Tariq Witherspoon after a hit-and-run that killed Brooklyn teacher Matthew Jansen last May. Jansen was crossing McGuinness Boulevard in Greenpoint on May 18 when he was hit by Witherspoon's Rolls Royce. Witherspoon was released after posting the $15,000 cash bail and was suspended from the FDNY without pay. (NBC New York)
- Bike advocates are "cautiously optimistic" about plans to improve and expand the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The NYC Parks Department has released plans for 11 projects to improve and connect the existing waterfront, which would make bike travel far more convenient. City transportation officials made a pledge in 2012 to construct a 26-mile cohesive bike lane, a promise which has not yet been fully realized. (Brooklyn Paper)
- Local LGBTQ leader Crystal Hudson has expressed great disappointment with Mayor Eric Adams' decision to appoint Fernando Cabrera and Erick Salgado as a senior faith adviser and an assistant commissioner in the mayor's immigrant affairs office, respectively, due to both men's "anti-gay histories." Hudson made history as the first openly gay, black woman elected to City Council, where she represents central Brooklyn, including Fort Greene and Clinton Hill. In a letter she cosigned with the Council's seven-person LGBTQ Caucus, she demanded that Adams rescind both men's appointments. (Patch)
