Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
- A shooting in the Cypress Hills neighborhood left one victim dead, and another injured. On Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m., shots were fired near the Van Sicken Avenue subway station, one of which hit the 38-year-old victim in the torso. He was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead. (ABC 7 NY)
- Earth Day drew a group of volunteers to the Brooklyn Bridge Park, where they spent their morning picking up trash and dead weeds throughout the park. Dozens of trash bags were filled over the course of three hours, preventing much of the waste from ending up in the East River. The cleanup on Friday was a part of a worldwide Earth Day campaign to remove trash from public outdoor spaces. (Brooklyn Paper)
- The city announced the completion of over 15 miles of new sewer lines in Canarsie and East New York. The $148 million project began in 2016, and sought to reduce flooding in southeastern Brooklyn, and curb the amount of sewage that flows into Fresh Creek and Jamaica Bay. The upgrade is expected to reduce the sewage outflow by over 189 million gallons annually. (Brooklyn Paper)
