Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. Fort Hamilton High School was deemed safe after students and staff were evacuated on Monday morning following a prank bomb threat. At approximately 11 a.m., an unknown individual called in a threat, which was officially deemed as a hoax by the NYPD about two hours later. Police did a full sweep of the high school and found no evidence of suspicious packages on the premises. (Brooklyn Paper)
  2. A 55-year-old woman was found stabbed to death just a few buildings down from her Van Buren Street home in Stuyvesant Heights. Cynthia McLeod was found at approximately 11 a.m. on Sunday morning and was pronounced dead on the scene. James Brown, 62, has been taken into custody and is facing murder and weapons possession charges. (NBC New York)
  3. Brooklyn's Caribbean community is reeling from a disturbing uptick in violent crimes in East Flatbush, and other Caribbean neighborhoods. A brutal attack against East Flatbush residents Kennisha Gilbert and her husband is a recent example of the kind of violence that has left hardworking homeowners living in fear. Residents hope that Mayor Eric Adams and the NYPD are doing everything in their power to restore safety to these communities, and throughout the city. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
  4. Brooklyn doctor Conrad Fisher returned from a humanitarian mission to Ukraine to deliver medical supplies and train volunteers. Fisher spent six days in a war zone, luckily returning unharmed but with a new perspective on the military conflict. Among his many patients were dozens of orphans, and he relayed that the situation was one of constant danger. (Brooklyn Paper)
  5. Witness these powerful images from Saturday's abortion-rights march. Activists made their way across the Brooklyn Bridge in protest of the Supreme Court's leaked information regarding the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade. New York's rally was one of many in major cities across the United States. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

Are you a Brooklyn resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
