- On Wednesday (Mar. 22), students at P.S. 1 in Sunset Park received the first of many free basketball clinics coming to Brooklyn schools. The clinic, provided by Brooklyn Nets Coach Jacque Vaughn, focused on basketball fundamentals and will be led by coaches and stars of the Nets and the New York Liberty basketball teams. Every single middle and elementary school in Brooklyn will receive the chance to host one of these clinics, reaching about 50,000 children by the end of 2023. (Spectrum News NY1)
- A former Brooklyn federal corrections officer has pleaded guilty to taking bribes from inmates at Metropolitan Detention Center in Sunset Park. Last April, staff members at the prison discovered that Jeremy Monk was bringing contraband into the prison and leaving it in a staff bathroom for inmates in exchange for $10,000. Monk worked at the federal prison from May 2020 to April 2022 and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison for taking bribes in exchange for smuggling illegal items. (Brooklyn Paper)
- A 4-month-old calf that escaped her slaughterhouse on Tuesday is now residing at a New Jersey-based animal sanctuary. The cow was captured on video running through Brooklyn's Canarsie neighborhood. Once the calf was caught with the help of bystanders, Skylands Animal Sanctuary phoned the slaughterhouse and convinced workers at the facility to spare the cow. (SILive.com)
