Here are the top four stories in Brooklyn today:

  1. Yesterday, Aug. 16, at a press conference outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY-10 Democratic Candidates implored the federal government to remedy conditions at the jail. Carlina Rivera, Yuh-Line Niou, Dan Goldman, and Mondaire Jones joined New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Comptroller Brad Lander at the conference. According to inmates and advocates, detainees at the complex are left without basic necessities like food, health care, and legal access. Abuse and violence are also common. Rivera called the conditions "utterly inhumane" and wants "human dignity at the largest federal pre-trial detention center in the country." The complex, which houses over 1,600 people, is located in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, now part of the newly created 10th Congressional District in New York. (Bloomberg)
  2. The iconic music venue, Knitting Factory, at 361 Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg is closing at the end of the month. The last show is on Aug. 21 featuring Hannibal Buress, Quelle Chris, Roofeeo, Marilee, and "some surprises." (Time Out)
  3. A new plant-based dessert shop, Dreamery, will open in Clinton Hill on Aug. 27. The new shop features foot-long churros, plant-based seasonal ice cream, and even toys and books. It is located at 299 Greene Avenue by Classon Avenue in Brooklyn. (Time Out)
  4. Flesh & Steel, a three day NYC festival celebrating industrial, darkwave, EBM, New Beat, and other music, will be in Brooklyn from Dec. 1 to Dec. 3. The multi-venue, three-day "industrial fest" features Boy Harsher, A Split-Second, Soft Crash, Parade Ground, Ms Boan, NGHTCRWLER, '80s Baby, and many more bands. (Brooklyn Vegan)
