Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. A human leg was discovered just blocks from where an unidentified female torso was found in Cypress Hills. Officers were responding to a call on Jamaica Avenue when they found the remains, and the investigation is ongoing. Investigators have not confirmed whether or not the two incidents are related. (NBC New York)
  2. Monday night's storm sent a large tree crashing into a Bay Ridge brownstone. The large tree caused significant damage to the roof, and one of the branches broke the fence in the front yard. While the tree caused significant damage to the house, nobody was hurt in the incident. (CBS New York)
  3. Construction on Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights has been extended another year. Delays caused by the pandemic and weather are listed as among the reasons for the continued work on improving the safety upgrade. The redesign was announced in 2015 and aims to improve pedestrian safety near Washington and Franklin avenues and an intersection near Utica and East New York avenues. (Patch)
  4. Brooklyn's COVID-19 rates are fairly low as two major coronavirus restrictions were lifted on Monday. As mask mandates in indoor venues and city schools are being lifted, official guidance still recommends wearing masks in public settings. Brooklyn's 7-day case rate is slightly lower than the city-wide rates. (Brooklyn Paper)
