Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
- Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion of a green infrastructure project, bringing structural improvements to various locations in South Brooklyn. The $13 million Governor's Office of Storm Recovery project brings rain barrels, gardens, and shade structures to mitigate flooding near Jamaica Bay. The project also aims to achieve safer streets, as well as reduce pollution in the area. (ny.gov)
- Three weeks since her disappearance, the NYPD continues its search of 23-year-old Tijae Baker. The missing woman was last seen leaving her home on Wortman Avenue on May 1 and is believed to have left the city for Washington D.C. that day. She has not been heard from since, and police in the D.C. area have been alerted to the case and have begun distributing missing person flyers. (NBC New York)
- A Brooklyn seventh grader has been chosen to enter Google's "Doodle for Google" contest, in hopes of her work being featured on the website's homepage. Kecia Imani Nelson's doodle, titled "Black Girl Magic," was chosen along with 53 other winners from across the country. If she wins, Explore Empower Charter School in Crown Heights will receive a $50,000 tech package, and Nelson will receive a $30,000 college scholarship. (News 12 Bronx)
- Late on Wednesday afternoon, a man was killed inside a Brooklyn Chinese restaurant. At approximately 4 p.m., 22-year-old Rasard Deas was dining at New Food First Cook in Gravesend when he was shot in the chest. At least one suspect was seen fleeing the scene in a red sedan. (NBC New York)
- Developers The Moinan Group, and Bushburg have secured a $105 million loan to build at 2840 Atlantic Ave. in East New York. The site will include affordable housing units, retail units, and over 100 parking spots. The building will yield 335 apartments, leasing for which is expected to launch in 2024. (New York YIMBY)
