Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
- A Brooklyn landlord has been ordered to repay tenants after withholding nearly $300,000. SGW Properties, operating in Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights and surrounding neighborhoods, agreed to repay the 129 tenants after investigators discovered the misdeed. The landlord had failed to provide lists of itemized reasons for withholding the deposit. (Brooklyn Patch)
- A Flatbush student was selected as the New York State winner for this year's Doodle for Google contest. The annual contest invites students K-12 to submit their ideas, all fitting a shared prompt. Kecia Imani Nelson's piece, titled "Black Girl Magic," could potentially lead to her being one of five finalists. (Brooklyn Paper)
- City health officials have renewed their advice to mask up in public spaces following a recent spike in COVID-19 cases. The risk level in Kings County has reached the status of "high." An average of 226 new cases per 100,000 people are being reported weekly in Brooklyn. (Brooklyn Paper)
- An Amazon delivery worker was robbed at knifepoint earlier this week. Surveillance video shows the suspect rifling through packages in the van. The 34-year-old victim had been making deliveries near Avenue W and Bragg Street in Sheepshead Bay. (Pix 11 NY)
- A Brooklyn man who was found beaten in his apartment on June 18 has died weeks after the incident. Michael Sydnor, 39, passed away in the hospital on Sunday due to trauma to his head and face. His death has been ruled a homicide, though no arrests have yet been made. (Patch)
