End Of An Era: Downtown Brooklyn’s Macy’s Store Closes Permanently
The Downtown Brooklyn Macy's was among 66 locations nationwide identified as 'underperforming' and slated for closure this quarter.

BROOKLYN, NY — The iconic Macy’s on Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn has officially closed down, according to officials.
The department store at 422 Fulton St. shut its doors for the final time on Sunday, as part of Macy's strategy to close 150 underperforming stores over the next three years. The company plans to open 350 smaller "go-forward" stores.
After more than three decades as a Macy's, the historic building—standing for 160 years and originally home to the Abraham & Straus department store—will remain vacant, with no details on what will replace it.

"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores," Macy’s chairman and CEO Tony Spring said.
The company did not specify what will happen to the employees at this store.

The affected employees include a range of roles, such as sales associates, managers, support staff, asset protection, fine jewelry and cosmetic sales associates and seasonal workers.
“It's a sad day for Brooklynites who've made countless memories here,” Councilmember Lincoln Restler wrote on social media when the closure was first announced earlier this year. “We’ll push to ensure this iconic space continues to maintain a retail presence.”
