Man Arrested In Shooting Blocks From BK Parade: NYPD

Witnesses say a 51-year-old was shot multiple times in Crown Heights over the weekend.

CROWN HEIGHTS, NY — A man accused of fatally shooting a 51-year-old just blocks from the West Indian Day Parade route was arrested Tuesday, police said.

Sergio Codrington, 39, stands accused of fatally shooting Muhammad Malik, 51, just before 9 p.m. Monday on Sterling Place near Schenectady Avenue, according to the NYPD.

Witnesses told the New York Daily News Malik was shot multiple times Monday just three blocks away from the parade route.

Malik was rushed to an area hospital Monday, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

Nine violent incidents were reported on or near the parade route throughout the weekend's festivities, according to the New York Daily News.

Even still, Mayor Eric Adams said the weekend was "probably the safest J'Ouvert celebration in history." Thousands of NYPD officers were deployed in anticipation of the day-long festivities as well as drones, authorities said.
