Here are the top five stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. According to police, on Aug. 10, a decomposing body of a 75-year-old man was found in a Brooklyn home that contained possible biohazard material. Police were conducting a welfare check at 101 Avenue in Cypress Hills when they discovered the body. On Aug. 11, a convenience store worker told The Post that "Chef John," the deceased man, was a former restaurant worker who had "openly talked about making poisons to ward off intruders." (New York Post)
  2. On Aug. 10, a Brooklyn gang member, 25-year-old Shakur Bartley, was arrested at his home in Brownsville and charged with murder and gun possession. According to police, Bartley is a member of the Nine Trey Billy Gang and allegedly shot 26-year-old Tyrie McLaughlin in front of the Brownsville Houses on Blake Avenue, a city public housing complex, on Jul. 12.   3. On Aug. 10, the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) posted a photo of an illegal pool on the roof of a Williamsburg building. The Flushing Avenue building was not equipped to support the weight of a 480-square-foot pool, which can hold 60 tons of water. The DOB ordered it to be torn down. (NBC New York)
  4. Brooklyn City Councilmembers and LGBTQIA+ Caucus Members Crystal Hudson and Chi Ossé plan to introduce bills to stop the spread of monkeypox. The bills will focus on getting vaccines to people of color in the LGBT communities, "who have long been ignored in past inaction." (Brooklyn Patch)
  5. A 44-year-old mother her 17-year-old teen son stabbed each other during a fight in their Brooklyn apartment, Coney Island Houses apartment on W. 29th Street, on Aug. 10. Police said as of Aug. 11, the mother has stab wounds to her face, stomach, and arms and is in critical but stable condition at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn. The son has stab wounds to his head and forearm and is in stable condition at the same hospital. No charges have been filed as of Aug. 11. (New York Daily News)
