Scooter-Rider Dies After Hitting A Road 'Defect' In Brooklyn: NYPD

The man was flung off his electric scooter, causing him to hit his head on the pavement in Prospect Park South, police said.

PROSPECT PARK SOUTH, NY — A 67-year-old died days after hitting a road defect on an electric scooter in Prospect Park South over the weekend, police said.

Armando Gonzalez, 67, was riding an electric scooter westbound on Beverly Road near Westminster Road on Aug. 13 about 2:20 p.m. when he hit a defect in the road, according to the NYPD.

Gonzalez was flung off his scooter and hit his head on the pavement, police said. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he died a week later.

The nature of the "defect" was not immediately clear.

Deaths on motorized two-wheel vehicles, including e-bikes, have surpassed fatalities on human-powered bikes, according to the New York Daily News.

Some 30 traffic deaths in 2022 can be attributed to e-bikes, scooters and similar motorized two-wheeled vehicles — including those used by deliveristas, according to the New York Daily News.

And by July 4 of this year, there had already been 18 such deaths.
