Shark Washes Up On Coney Island Beach

A brave beachgoer helped the small shark back into the water, a witness said.

CONEY ISLAND, BROOKLYN — A brave beachgoer nudged a shark back into the water after it swam ashore on Coney Island Beach Tuesday, a witness told Patch.

Swimmers charged out of the water and crowded around the small shark that swam onto the beach off of West 16th Street at roughly 1 p.m. Stunned beachgoers pulled out their phones and shot photos and video of the flopping fish.

One witness, who was visiting the beach with family, described the chaotic scene.

"We were all just sitting and then suddenly people were screaming, 'Shark shark shark!'" said Michael McCarthy, 21, who lives in Dyker Heights. "A big crowd showed up around him and people were taking photos, then this guy showed up and helped him back in the water."

Video shows a man trying to push the shark into the water. McCarthy said the shark eventually made it back into the Atlantic Ocean and swam off.
