- NYC Summer Streets is back for two more Saturdays, today (Aug. 13) and next week, Aug. 20. View the link for a full list of where cars cannot drive today. (NBC New York)
- There were three fires yesterday in Brooklyn. At around 3:35 a.m., a massive fire broke out at a Brooklyn recycling plant located at 1888 Pitkin Avenue. At around 8:13 a.m., the FDNY was able to control the fire and debris. At around 7:15 a.m., there was a large fire at a building on Montrose Avenue in East Williamsburg. FDNY crews got the fire under control by 9:00 a.m., but three firefighters and another person were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. At around 11:15 a.m, the FDNY rescued a man from toxic smoke and high heat during a Brooklyn house fire on the second floor of 681 East 83rd Street in Canarsie. The man is in critical but stable condition at Brookdale Hospital. And another resident suffered minor injuries as well. At around 11:58 a.m., the firefighters had the fire under control. - The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH) detected poliovirus (the virus that causes paralytic polio) in sewage suggesting likely local circulation of the virus. Unvaccinated New Yorkers are urged to get vaccinated for polio. (NYC Gov)
- Eight Ukrainian children recently arrived in the Fort Green neighborhood of Brooklyn to perform the play "Mom on Skype" in a converted Sunday school space. The play was first staged in April in Lviv at the Irondale Center. (The New York Times)
