Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. A Brooklyn street was named for a 12-year-old shooting victim two months after his tragic death. The family of Kade Lewin was joined by community members and politicians to honor the legacy of their son, and to raise awareness to the rising threat of gun violence. (New York Daily News)
  2. A new development in Park Slope will be the city's first condominium made of precut timber. The aptly named six-story Timber House was built using sustainable materials that have been common in Europe for over 20 years. The materials were all precut and assembled on site. (Patch)
  3. The Flatbush Avenue Street Fair returns this weekend for the first time since 2020. The event will take place on June 12 between Parkside Avenue and Cortelyou Road. Partygoers will enjoy music, shopping, food, and other exciting events throughout the day. (Patch)
  4. A library has opened in Brooklyn Heights on the ground floor of a luxury residential development. The new branch of the Brooklyn Public Library launched at 286 Cadman Plaza West, and is now the second largest branch after Central Library. The building features high ceilings and tall windows overlooking Cadman Plaza. (6Sqft)
  5. An East New York intersection will undergo a major redesign to provide better safety measures. The Atkins Avenue and Linden Boulevard intersection is one of 10 streets near schools that Mayor Eric Adams has promised to renovate by the end of the year. These projects are part of the larger, $900 million street safety initiative that is comprised of more than 100 projects. (Patch)

Are you a Brooklyn resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
